Happy Birthday to the iconic Jane Birkin
Today the birthday of the iconic Jane Birkin - whom the Hermes luxury handbag is named after. Yes, Hermes named their infamous Birkin bag after the English actress Jane Birkin. While traveling on an airplane from France to England, Ms. Birkin was seated next to the President of Hermes, Ms. Birkin had her things keep falling out of her straw carry on bag and that’s when the President of Hermes introduced himself to the actress. They then sketched out the “Birkin” bag on that flight on a sickness bag.

Pictured above is the VERY first Hermes Birkin bag that belonged personally to Jane Birkin. It is now on display around the world as it has been sold to a good friend of ours, Catherine B from France, who lets museums and other exhibitions have it on display. Did you notice the first Hermes Birkin actually had a shoulder strap?? I wonder if Hermes will come out with another version again like that with the optional shoulder strap as they do on their Kelly’s and most other Hermes bags.
To this day, Jane Birkin gets a royalty of around $100,000 a year for Hermes to use her name on their bag plus she gets to have ONE Hermes Birkin bag of her choice COMPLIMENTARY at a time. She usually auctions off her other Birkin’s after she is done using them. She also loves to style up her Birkin’s with stickers and lanyards and different bag charms as we have seen.
